Madison Veterinary Specialists (MVS) is seeking qualified applicants for a 12 month internship program. Interns will have access to didactic learning as well as primary case responsibility under direct supervision.

Employment information:

Salary: Competitive within market

Vacation: 80 hours PTO with an additional 20 hours for continuing education

Benefits: Payment for licensing and dues, PLIT, PTO, CE (up to $2,600/year), Medical, Dental, and vision insurance as well as available FSA/HSA plans. Base Life, AD&D.

Prerequisites other than being a Graduate of the College of Veterinary Medicine:

Clinical Experience and Responsibilities:

Interns will have primary case care with emergency cases, managing hospitalized patients, communicating with clients and writing records. They are under direct supervision on site with mentorship at all times, with an additional mentor who is a veterinarian in the practice. Interns will have the opportunity to train and rotate through the specialty service of their choice. Interns will be the primary surgeon on standard emergency procedures (thoracocentesis, pericardiocentesis, unblocking male cats, etc) and minor surgeries (laceration repairs, chest tube placement). They are able to be the primary surgeon with emergency surgeries (GDV, splenectomy, Foreign body removal, spay/pyometra, C-section) more as internship progresses. The expectation is that the intern is able to be the primary surgeon for emergency surgeries at the completion of internship. Interns are expected to write complete and concise records with lists of differentials. Board Certified Specialists or staff doctors to review and sign off on records until deemed satisfactory. Patient rounds are held twice daily.

The expectation of the program is that interns receive well rounded, thorough clinical and didactic training in emergency medicine as well as our core specialty services. Upon completion of the program, the intern should be proficient in medicine, diagnostics, surgery and the client communication aspects of veterinary medicine. Although this is an emergency and critical care focused internship, the program can be tailored to match an intern’s specific long term goals.

Didactic training:

Interns have weekly didactic rounds on a variety of topics. M & M rounds are held every other month with all ER doctors and specialists in attendance. Journal club is held every other month at MVS and includes all ER doctors and specialists. Annual cadaver lab facilitated by board certified surgeons for staff, DVM’s, and Interns, with focused time allotted for Interns.

Scheduling:

Approximately 15-18 shifts / month, including weekends and holidays. This excludes didactic training time.

Orientation/Supervision:

Interns will be under direct supervision by an attending doctor at all times. They will have a mentor who is a veterinarian in the practice, with quarterly review.
